Series: Meet the team – Ricky Hawthorne, Logistics Coordinator

“I’ve been able to do technical things I didn’t think were possible”

Ricky Hawthorne, Logistics CoordinatorRicky Hawthorne joined DSL in January 2023 as Production Coordinator after working as a supervisor for a family-run furniture business for seven years.

“It’s great to work within the technology and manufacturing industry,” says Ricky. “I’m the perfect example of someone with minimal computer skills who has found a job I love – working for an embedded computing company!”

Ricky began his informal training by shadowing the rest of the DSL team to understand their roles and tasks which he said was both daunting and fascinating: “With the support of the team, I’ve been able to do things I didn’t think were possible.

What at first seemed too complicated, has now become second nature to me and I’m assembling products on a daily basis.”

He’s about to embark on a more formal training programme: “I love learning new skills and taking on a challenge. I still sometimes feel out of my comfort zone, but most people do when they change careers.

“DSL is easily one of the best places I’ve worked, it’s refreshing. There are no egos, everyone supports one another and there’s a great culture of honesty, dedication and humour. I’m excited about the opportunities at DSL and about what the future may bring.”

Ricky adds: “I’d encourage others who may dismiss a career working in tech because of a perceived lack of IT skills, to go for it. They are many different paths and roles within the sector. Soft skills such as attention to detail, teamwork and reliability are all transferable skills that come in handy. You don’t have to be a technical expert to step into this world.”

Outside of work, Ricky describes himself as a family man whose favourite place is at home with his children. He enjoys swimming, badminton and being outdoors, particularly on woodland walks, and loves a true crime podcast.
